The game was re-released for the Nintendo GameCube less than a year later, under the name Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, with several tweaks to various aspects regarding graphics and gameplay features. Due to being released at the end of the Dreamcast's lifetime, however, it performed commercially badly. It nevertheless received criticism for failing to address its prequel's flaws, most noticeably the camera orientations.
Like its predecessor, Sonic Adventure 2 was met with positive reviews, with praise for its gameplay variety, visuals, and music. When the hedgehog learns that the true culprit is Shadow, whom he has been mistaken with, and that Eggman is up to no good again and plans to conquer the world using a planet-shattering weapon, he joins forces with his friends Tails, Knuckles and Amy to stop both evildoers and prove his innocence. In this game, Sonic is arrested by the Guardian Units of Nations military organization due to being the supposed perpetrator of a Chaos Emerald theft. Sonic Adventure 2 additionally serves as the debut of Shadow the Hedgehog, a black hedgehog that vaguely looks like Sonic, and Rouge the Bat, an enigmatic treasure hunter.
The game features two good-and-evil storylines, each featuring three playable characters with whom they share a gameplay style with their opposite counterpart. It is the sequel to Sonic Adventure and was developed to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the franchise, as well as the last Sonic title to be released on a Sega console.
